Local SEO for Small Businesses: How Customers Find You on Google

When someone in your town types "plumber Kruševac" or "hairdresser near me", do you show up — or does your competitor? Local SEO is exactly that difference: whether a potential customer finds you at the moment they need the service most, or goes to someone else.

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the optimisation that makes you visible to people searching for a service in your town or surrounding area. Google treats these searches differently from ordinary ones: above the standard results it shows a map with three highlighted businesses — the so-called "local pack". Getting into that trio means capturing most of the calls and visits. That is the goal of local SEO.

Your Google Business Profile is the foundation

Before anything else comes the Google Business Profile. It is a free tool that decides whether you appear on the map at all. Do the following:

  • Register and verify the profile — without verification there is no ranking.
  • Enter accurate NAP details — name, address, and phone, identical to your website.
  • Choose the right categories and fully complete your services and opening hours.
  • Add quality photos — premises, team, work done; profiles with photos get far more clicks.
  • Collect reviews and reply to them — both positive and negative. Reviews are one of the strongest local signals.
  • Post regularly with news, offers, and services through Google posts.

A business with a well-kept, active profile almost always outranks a competitor with an empty or neglected one.

Local keywords

People do not search for "services" — they search for "service + town" or "near me". So you need local keywords:

  • Combinations such as "dentist Novi Sad", "car service Kragujevac", "accountant Kruševac".
  • Variations with "near me", "price", "urgent", "24h".
  • Names of neighbourhoods and surrounding places you serve.

You then use these terms in page titles, body copy, and service descriptions — naturally, not stuffed.

On-page basics you must have

Your website has to send a clear signal to both Google and the visitor:

  • Title and meta description with the town — for example "Car Service in Kruševac | Vebiko".
  • A dedicated page for each service (and for each location if you work in several towns) instead of one crowded page.
  • Consistent NAP in the header, footer, and contact page — identical to your Google profile.
  • LocalBusiness schema (structured data) so Google unambiguously understands who you are, where you are, and what you do.
  • Speed and a mobile version — most local searches happen on a phone, on the move.

You can see how we set all of this up as part of a broader approach on the SEO and digital marketing page.

Local citations and backlinks

A citation is any mention of your name, address, and phone on another website. Google uses them to confirm you are real and to build trust. So:

  • List your business in relevant local directories — 011info, Firme.co.rs, Planplus, local catalogues, and trade associations.
  • Keep the NAP identical everywhere — even the smallest inconsistency (Street vs. St., different phone numbers) confuses Google.
  • Build local backlinks: partners, suppliers, local media, sponsorships of events and clubs. One link from a relevant local site is worth more than ten random ones.

Why does SEO take months?

This is the question that frustrates people most. The answer: Google builds trust over time and does not hand out rankings overnight. Realistically expect:

  • First movements within 2–3 months (profile, technical basics, first reviews).
  • More serious results within 4–6 months in moderately competitive niches.
  • 6–12 months for competitive industries and larger cities.

SEO is not a switch you flip but interest that compounds — what you do today keeps paying off for months and years ahead.

What to expect and what it costs

Local SEO in Serbia usually splits into two parts:

  • One-off setup of the Google profile and on-page basics — roughly 100–300 EUR.
  • Monthly work (content, reviews, citations, links, tracking) — realistically 150–500 EUR per month (around 17,000–60,000 RSD), depending on competition and goals.

What you get is not "first place guaranteed" — no honest agency promises that — but steady growth in visibility, more calls and enquiries, and a presence exactly where your customers are already looking.
